Chapter Twelve

Jace appeared while I was straightening out the brochures and magazines in the lobby seating area thinking about my conversation with Brittany. His presence was enough to make me forget all about it for a moment.

“Can I help you?” he whispered from behind.

I resisted the shiver that gave me. “I’ve got it covered. Thank you.”

He followed me around as I straightened up. “How’s your evening been?”

I looked around to make sure no one was paying too much attention or within ear shot. “Interesting.”

“How?”

I thought about telling him about Brittany, but did he really care about my old high school drama? I went the business route. "I saw some of my competition tonight.”

“And?”

“I’m worried.”

He tilted his head. “Are you sure this promotion is what you want?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

“Your talents are being underutilized here. Don’t even get me started on the hours they make you work. One day off a week and long shifts? And I know they aren’t paying you what you deserve. Places like this never do.”

“It’s my only option right now.”

“Have you looked anywhere else?”

“Not really. There aren’t that many options around here. And having my parents close by has been a huge help.”

“I have some connections in Nashville.” He lowered his voice. “Or you could look out of state. I have—”

“Are you offering me a job?”

He blew out a heavy breath. “I’m not sure. I don’t want to mix my professional and personal life together.”

“That’s a good rule.” I turned from him and straightened a cushion on one of the lobby chairs. “But we aren’t personal, right?” I spoke softly into the chair.

He didn’t answer right away. “Why don’t you send me your résumé and I’ll float it around to some of my contacts.”

“I don’t think so.”

He skimmed my arm. “Hey.”

I looked up and met his eyes.

“I want to help. And I would hire you in a second, but . . .”

“But what?”

“I have some things to sort out and I don’t want to muddy any waters.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“I’m not asking you for a job or your help. I hardly know you.”

“It doesn’t feel that way to me.” His roguish smile made an appearance.

“I mean, your mom has already invited me to dinner.”

I headed toward the business services center to make sure it was stocked. “I forgot to mention that she’s crazy and says things she shouldn’t.”

Jace followed me. “She seemed completely lucid to me.”

The coffee was all but gone in the center, so I started to make a new pot.

Jace was determined to stay by my side. “What are you so afraid of?”

I stared at him with the empty pot in hand. “Disappointment.” I couldn’t disappoint everyone again, especially myself.

“What kind?”

“All kinds. Listen, I really appreciate your offer to help, but I need to do things on my own. I want the promotion here. It makes more sense for me.”

“Does it really?”

“Yes,” I sighed. He was beginning to exasperate me or was it that he was making me think things I was afraid of?

He pressed his lips together and thought.
